Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Skills Assessment?

Skills Assessment is the process of recognising an individual’s skills and knowledge. Typically these skills and knowledge match the requirements of an Australian Qualification. The process is sometimes referred to as Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). Normally the assessment process will consist of a practical demonstration of skills, within a workplace. Where this is not possible, then a simulated activity can be performed.

It must be realised that most Australian Qualifications, require additional skills and knowledge that is aligned to the Australian Standards and Australian Safety Standards.

How do I go about getting a trade licence so I can run my own business?

It must be first stated that the pathway to a trade licence in all regulatory states and territories, is through the application of a person, in possession of an Australian Trade Qualification, or higher.

Each state and territory has different standards for licensing against trade areas, however the requirement of qualifications is consistent. You will find that many of the trades are not a licence class in some states and territories. The Australian Government with each of the states cooperation are currently moving towards a single licensing system. Therefore, depending on the state and/or territory and your trade, depends on whether you need a trade licence. As each persons needs are unique, it is worthwhile contacting tradesrecognition.com to gain this advice.

I need to have my skills recognised for an immigration visa. What is the process?

ACTS does not provide migration advice, we highly recommend using one of our MARA registered migration agent.

How many years of experience is required to be assessed?

In simple terms, most trade qualifications require at least 4 years experience. We want to ensure that the Australian Apprenticeship System remains viable, therferore, we look favorourably on the 4 year term. There are times when this is not required, such as if the RPL process is being used as an anlysis as to where someone is in thier career pathway.

Where is the assessments conducted?

All assessments are conducted in a live workplace environment. If this is not possible, due to confidentiality, then ACTS will arrange for the assessment to be conducted in an alternative location.
